CBC News - Research In Motion (RIM) is launching the BlackBerry PlayBook, a tablet computer designed to compete with Apple's iPad.
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company announced the device at a developers' conference in San Francisco on Monday, September 27, 2010.
The PlayBook is aimed at business customers, co-chief executive Michael Lazaridis said during a speech at the conference. The device is 9.7 millimetres thick and features a seven-inch touch screen. It can run both HTML 5 and Flash 10.1 and has a one gigahertz dual-core processor with one gigabyte of RAM.
Lazaridis said the PlayBook is compatible with a business's existing enterprise servers, so there is no need for additional software, security or data plans. The device can connect with a user's BlackBerry via Bluetooth and share the same data plan.

One of the most requested additions to a tablet is the ability for the unit to support Adobe Flash which the Playbook does. Also supported is HTML 5. The device sports a 7 inch LCD display capable of 1024x600 display and weighs less than one pound making it ultra lightweight for travel and general use.
A built in micro USB connector allows a connection to charge and other devices. The added feature is that the Playbook runs on the Blackberry Tablet OS making it easy and simple to use.
Also included are two cameras which allow video conferencing. The front facing camera has a 3 megapixel, high definition capability with the rear capable of five megapixels. The video playback features can handle 1080i HD. A 1 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM is also standard.
